MIL-DTL-5015 (originally MIL-C-5015) is the heavy-duty threaded circular connector used on military ground vehicles, shipboard equipment, rail, aircraft ground support and industrial machinery. Class letter
A is the solid-shell general-purpose class. R is environment-resisting with a rear grommet seal in a solid shell. E is environment-resisting with a grommet, and F adds a cable clamp. Class R and E are the usual choice wherever moisture or vibration is present.
Shell size and insert arrangement
The number pair after the class letter is shell size and insert arrangement. In MS3108R28-11S, the shell is size 28 and the insert is arrangement 11, which carries 22 size-16 contacts. Other everyday arrangements: 20-29 (17 size-16 contacts), 22-14 (19 size-16 contacts), 28-21 (37 size-16 contacts). Shell sizes run from 10SL up to 48; sizes with an S suffix (10S, 14S, 16S) are short-shell versions.
Contact gender and insert position
P is pin contacts, S is socket contacts. A trailing W, X, Y or Z indicates a rotated insert position for polarization, so an MS3106R28-11SZ only mates with a receptacle in the Z position.
Mating
MS3100-series connectors intermate across all qualified manufacturers. An Amphenol MS3108R28-11S plug mates with any MS3102R28-11P box receptacle, whether it was built by Amphenol, ITT Cannon or another QPL source. Threaded coupling gives a secure, vibration-tolerant connection; the reverse-bayonet MS3450 series offers the same inserts with faster mating.
