MS3180 vs MS3181: MIL-DTL-26482 Protective Cover Part Numbers Explained
MS3180 and MS3181 are the protective covers for MIL-DTL-26482 bayonet connectors (MS3110 to MS3128 Series 1 and MS3470 to MS3479 Series 2). They are the most requested covers we stock, and the suffix letters cause the most confusion.
MS3180: receptacle cover
MS3180 has bayonet pins like a plug and caps a receptacle (MS3110, MS3112, MS3114, MS3120, MS3470, MS3474, MS3475).
MS3181: plug cover
MS3181 has bayonet ramps like a receptacle and caps a plug (MS3116, MS3126, MS3476, MS27476).
Decoding the suffix
MS3181-16CA: 16 is the shell size. The letters describe the attachment: C chain, CA chain with attachment ring, CAL chain, ring and lanyard, N or NA nylon cord or nylon cord with ring, R or RA rope lanyard. The number after the letters, when present, is the chain length.
Finish
Standard finish is olive drab cadmium over aluminum, matching class W connectors. Nickel versions are available for class N. Both are conductive so the cover maintains shell continuity.
Sizes 8 through 24 are stocked; see the MIL-DTL-26482 stock page for the connectors they fit.

Frequently asked questions
Does MS3181 fit Series 2 (MS3476) plugs?
Yes. The bayonet interface is common to Series 1 and Series 2, so MS3181 in the matching shell size fits both.
What does CAL mean on MS3180-14CAL?
Chain, attachment ring and lanyard. The lanyard lets the cover hang clear of the mated connector.
Which cover fits an MS3120E14-19 receptacle?
MS3180-14 in the attachment style you prefer, for example MS3180-14CA.
