Reading a MIL-DTL-5015 part number
Take MS3106R28-11S. MS3106 is the shell style (straight plug). R is the service class (R = solder contacts, environmental resisting, the modern replacement for the old A, B and E classes). 28 is the shell size, 11 is the insert arrangement (22 contacts) and S means socket contacts (P would be pins). Add W for wide-range cable clamp or a shape suffix and you have a complete part.
- MS3100: wall-mount receptacle
- MS3101: cable connecting receptacle
- MS3102: box-mount receptacle with square flange
- MS3106: straight plug
- MS3108: 90-degree plug
- MS3450 to MS3459: the crimp-contact, rear-release series (MS3450 wall receptacle, MS3451 cable receptacle, MS3452 box receptacle, MS3456 straight plug, MS3459 90-degree plug)
Cable clamps and bushings
MS3100-series connectors do not include strain relief. Add an MS3057 cable clamp in the same shell size (MS3057-16A for size 24 and 28 shells, for example) and the MS3420 telescoping bushing that reduces the clamp opening to your cable diameter. We stock MS3057-8A, -10A, -16A and -16C and MS3420-8 bushings.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between MS3106 and MS3108?
Both are MIL-DTL-5015 plugs. MS3106 is straight; MS3108 exits the cable at 90 degrees. Insert arrangements and contacts are identical, so MS3106R28-11S and MS3108R28-11S mate with the same receptacle.
What does the R mean in MS3102R?
R is the service class: solder contacts, environmental resisting, with a resilient insert. It superseded the older A (general purpose) and E (environmental) classes and is what most drawings call out today.
Are MS3450 series connectors intermateable with MS3100 series?
Yes. The MS3450 series uses crimp rear-release contacts instead of solder cups, but the shells, threads and insert arrangements mate with MS3100-series connectors of the same size and arrangement.
Which cable clamp fits an MS3106 size 20 plug?
MS3057-12A (size 20 and 22 shells). Use an MS3420 bushing to size the clamp to the cable jacket.
Which dust cap fits a MIL-DTL-5015 receptacle?
MS25042 in the matching shell size, for example MS25042-28DA for a size 28 receptacle. MS25043 is the cap for plugs.
