How M85049 part numbers work
An M85049 part number is a slash sheet, a shell size and a finish code. The slash sheet tells you the connector family and the geometry; the dash number is the connector shell size; the letter is the plating.
- M85049/38: straight strain relief with saddle clamp for MIL-DTL-38999 Series III and Series IV (shell sizes 9 to 25, dash numbers 9, 11, 13 … 25). The workhorse D38999 backshell.
- M85049/39: the 90-degree version of /38 for D38999 when the cable has to exit sideways.
- M85049/49: straight strain relief for MIL-DTL-26482 Series 2, MIL-DTL-83723 Series III and similar threaded connectors (sizes 8 to 24, /49-2 is the saddle-clamp style).
- M85049/51: straight strain relief for MIL-DTL-5015 and 26482 Series 1 bayonet connectors (/51-1 and /51S).
- M85049/52: 90-degree strain relief for the same families as /51.
- M85049/14, /31, /69, /95: nuts, E-nuts, self-locking rings and other accessories.
Finish letters: N electroless nickel (the most common), W olive drab cadmium over nickel (1,000-hour salt spray), A black anodize, Z zinc-nickel. For a D38999 class W connector, order the W backshell; for class F or G, order N.
MS27506 and MS3417
MS27506 is the older strain-relief designation for MIL-DTL-38999 Series I and II bayonet connectors, and MS3417 is the 90-degree clamp for MIL-DTL-5015 and 26482 Series 1. We stock both, plus MS3186 hex jam nuts and MS3057 cable clamps.

Frequently asked questions
Which M85049 backshell fits a D38999/26 plug?
M85049/38 (straight) or M85049/39 (90 degree). Match the dash number to the connector shell size: a D38999/26WC35PN is shell size 13, so it takes M85049/38-13 or /39-13. Use the W finish for class W connectors and N for class F, G or N.
Which backshell fits MIL-DTL-26482 Series 2 (MS3470 to MS3476)?
M85049/49-2 straight or the 90-degree M85049/52. Dash number equals shell size (8 to 24).
Which backshell fits MIL-DTL-5015 (MS3100 to MS3108, MS3450 series)?
M85049/51 straight or M85049/52 90 degree for the threaded shells, or an MS3057 cable clamp with the matching MS3420 bushing for the classic MS3100 series.
